Saltwater aquaponics (or sometimes marine aquaponics) is a combination plant and fish farming system similar to standard aquaponics. As the name suggests, the main difference to traditional aquaponics is the use of saltwater instead of the more commonly used freshwater. The concept is meant to be a natural and sustainable way to eliminate the stresses on the environment caused by conventional fish farming practices.
Currently, saltwater aquaponics is being studied as an extension of aquaponics, which normally is done with freshwater species. Commercial saltwater aquaponics is being developed with various profitable combinations of plants and animals that thrive in saltwater. Therefore, instead of using freshwater plants to process the wastewater from fishes; plants like barley, rice, common ice plant and seaweed can be used.
Some of the common aquatic live found in commercial operations may include sea finfish, crustaceans, echinoderms, prawns, shrimp, abalone, flatfishes, puffer fish, sea urchins and molluscs.
