As developing countries still rely on the 20th-century technology for farming; in more developed nations we are seeing rapid development in new automated farming technology. Most of these new technologies are based on the same information technologies that brought us the internet and transformation in medicine.
Nowadays we have robots that can already do much of the harvesting of lettuce and tomatoes in our greenhouses. Some robots can even pick fruits like apple, strawberries and raspberries etc. These robots have such high efficiencies, they are even starting to outpace human workers.
Farming is a high labour-intensive industry and since most developed countries face a labour shortage in agriculture, robots fill a very important role. Especially in organic farms where more planning and care is required. Robots can help free up the human labour force so they can focus on doing more complex tasks such as pest control and organic soil building.
