Aquaponics Can Solve Environmental Issues

Problem:

A lot of fish farms operate with net pens which share the water with surrounding native wildlife.

  • These net pens provide no chemical barrier between the fish farmed and surrounding wild fish. Therefore, researchers have found chemicals like pesticides used in fish farms free-flowing their way into nature.

  • Depending on the size of the operation, fish waste can also affect the balance of the surrounding ecosystem.

  • Diseases from farm fish can be transmitted to wild fish destroying their populations.

  • These net pens used are not immune to storms and predators. Once damaged, farmed fish can swim free into native waters taking up food, territories and prey on other smaller native fish.

Solution:

A closed-loop aquaponic system can be built on land to completely separate the farm fish from any surrounding waterways.

  • Stops any fish waste, chemical or disease from flowing into nature.

  • Plants act as a filter and purify the water, greatly minimising any waste generated.

  • Aquaponics is the science of creating a well-balanced ecosystem for fish and plants to thrive and stay healthy. Reducing the need for chemical pesticides.

  • Land-based indoor fish tanks are made to be much more solid than net pens.  The risk of failure is low and even if the tank is breached, nothing can make their way into nature.

  • Plants grown in the system provide another valuable food source for the community.

  • Plants grown in aquaponics use up to 90% less water than conventional farms.
